Thirteen-year-old Brittany Jones of Toronto and Kurtis Gaskell of Guelph, Ont., were sixth in pairs on Friday at the third stop on the ISU junior Grand Prix figure skating circuit.
Ksenia Stobolva and Fedor Klimov of Russia won the gold medal upsetting world junior champions Sui Winjing and Han Cong of China in second. Their compatriots Yu Xiaoyu and Jin Yang were third.
Jones and Gaskell, seventh at the world juniors last year and bronze medallists at a junior Grand Prix stop last season, were hoping to fare better although they climbed eighth to sixth with the fifth best long program of the day.
“It went O.K., but it certainly wasn’t our best performance,” said Gaskell, 20. “We were rushing stuff. Our big new element this year is the side-by-side triple jump and it’s still iffy at this point.”
Kristen Tikel of Kitchener, Ont., and Ian Beharry of Guelph, Ont., were 10th out of 15 entries. It was their second career international meet.
“We expected to go clean in the long and we almost got there,” said Tikel, 16. The pair had a bobble in the middle of the program.
In ice dancing, Charlotte Lichtman and Dean Copely of the U.S., took the gold, Victoria Sinitsina and Ruslan Zhiganshin of Russia were second and Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron of France third.
Edrea Khong and her brother Edbert Khong of Ajax, Ont., were ninth in their international debut.
“To get this experience was extremely valuable for us and will help us achieve our goals this season,” said Edbert Khong, 15, two years older than his sister. “We were happy with our performance here. It wasn’t our best but satisfying for our first time out against an international field.”
The women’s singles short program was also on Friday and Kate Charbonneau of Winnipeg was 13th.
In men’s singles on Thursday, Samuel Morais of Laval, Que., was 11th after the short program.
The men’s and women’s long programs are on Saturday.
